How to introduce yourself in Spanish

A simple, straighforward guide on how to introduce yourself in Spanish.

HOW TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF IN SPANISH.

Introducing yourself is (usually) the first step in any conversation, and so learning how to properly do it is one of the best ways to begin your learning of a new language.

In this post I will show you how to introduce yourself in Spanish.

Let’s begin.

Saying hello and introducing yourself.

The first step to begin a conversation is to say hello. Just like in any other language, there are many ways in which you can do it depending on the context and the relationship you have (or wish to have) with your listener.

The best way to break the ice is to begin with a simple hola (hello).

Once you get the first word out of the way, it would be reasonable to introduce yourself. These are some of the best ways of doing so.

  • Mi nombre es David / Me llamo David = My name is David / I am called David.
  • Soy Alemán / Vengo de Inglaterra = I am German / I come from England.
  • Tengo veintidós años = I am twenty-two years old.
  • Vivo en Berlín, Alemania = I live in Berlin, Germany.
  • Trabajo en una empresa de coches = I work at a car company.
  • Soy estudiante / Estoy estudiando = I am a student / I am studying.
  • Estoy encantado de conocerte / Es un placer conocerte = I am pleased to meet you / it is a pleasure to meet you.

Asking and replying questions.

If you are introducing yourself to someone, then chances are you are both going to ask questions to get to know each other better. Requesting information from someone in a different language may be a nerve-breaking thing to do at first, but it gets easier over time.

Do not worry If you are unsure of what to ask. These examples will give you a head start to get things rolling.

  • ¿Cómo te llamas? / ¿Cuál es tu nombre? = What is your name?
  • ¿De dónde eres? = Where are you from?
  • ¿Dónde vives? = Where do you live?
  • ¿Cuántos años tienes? / ¿Qué edad tienes? = How old are you? / What is your age?
  • ¿Dónde trabajas? / ¿A qué te dedicas? = Where do you work? / What do you do?
  • ¿Tienes hermanos? / ¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? = Do you have any siblings? / How many siblings do you have?

Keep in mind that asking questions is not always easy. You should always be mindful of the context surrounding both you and your partner before asking any question that may backfire later in the conversation.

Showing an example.

Here’s a clear example on how to introduce yourself in Spanish.

  • Hola. Mi nombre es Andrés (Hello. My name is Andrés). Soy de Inglaterra y tengo treinta y tres años (I come from England and I am thirty-three years old). Actualmente vivo en España y trabajo de profesor en un colegio público (I am currently living in Spain and working as a teacher in a public school). Es un placer conocerte (It is a pleasure to meet you).

Bear in mind that the previous text is just a model. You can make your own presentation according to your personal information and depending on the context for which it is required.

Why not trying doing it yourself?
